The region has several front doors. The cheapest one depends on what happens after you land.
If the plan is two weeks somewhere in Southeast Asia, searching only for the final city can be the most expensive way to begin. Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Bali and Vietnam are not interchangeable dots on a map. They are different front doors, each with a different airfare, connection pattern and cost of continuing the journey.
A wide search creates the opportunity. The work comes next. A cheap arrival into Bali may be brilliant if you wanted three nights there anyway. It may be a false saving if you immediately buy another ticket to Hanoi, pay for a bag again and spend a day returning to the airport.
The question is not simply, “Where can I land for the least?” It is, “Which arrival makes the first 48 hours of this trip cheaper and better?”

Sky Spy's cache held a useful like-for-like example on 30 August. For one-way economy travel from Brisbane on 18 November 2026, Bali appeared at A$270 direct. Singapore followed at A$422, then Ho Chi Minh City at A$455, Kuala Lumpur at A$465 and Bangkok at A$468. Those four alternatives involved one stop in the observed itineraries.
Bali won the airfare by at least A$152. That does not make it the automatic winner. If the first week of the trip is in Thailand or Vietnam, A$152 is the entire budget available for the onward flight, another baggage charge, an airport transfer and the value of the extra time. If Bali is already in the plan, the same fare becomes much harder to beat.

The Perth effect
Western Australia gets a different shortlist
The same cache contained direct Perth sightings of A$146 to Bali for 8 February 2027, A$180 to Kuala Lumpur for 4 March and A$182 to Singapore for 16 February. The dates are different, so this is not a ranking. It is evidence that Perth travellers should compare several gateways before deciding which country starts the trip.

Each airport solves a different trip
There is no champion gateway for all of Southeast Asia. Geography matters, but so do the airline network, the airport transfer and whether the arrival city earns its place in the itinerary.
The route-builder
Kuala Lumpur
Kuala Lumpur is most valuable when the cheap arrival is only the first part of the plan. It gives you a sensible city stop and a broad set of onward options without forcing the holiday through the most expensive-looking airport on the original search. Keep Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 in the calculation: a separate-ticket itinerary may involve immigration, baggage collection and a terminal change before the next check-in.
The low-friction gateway
Singapore
Singapore rarely needs much explaining after a long flight. The airport is organised, the city is easy to reach and an overnight stop can feel like part of the holiday rather than damage control. The trade-off is cost: a convenient hotel and a night out can spend a fare saving quickly. Singapore wins when the connection is clean, the schedule is humane or you genuinely want the stopover.
The two-airport gateway
Bangkok
Bangkok is not one airport. Suvarnabhumi handles a large international network; Don Mueang is a major low-cost departure point. A cheap itinerary that arrives at one and leaves from the other is not a normal connection. It is a journey across a very large city, with immigration and baggage in the middle. Bangkok is excellent when Thailand is first, or when the onward flight leaves from the same airport with a generous buffer.
The cheap destination, not always the cheap gateway
Bali
Bali often produces the number that wins the first screen, especially from Perth and sometimes from the east coast. If Bali is part of the holiday, that is a genuine advantage. If the real plan is Vietnam, Thailand or Malaysia, the second flight can return every dollar saved and add another airport day. Treat Bali as a destination with onward options—not automatically as the front door to the entire region.
The north-or-south decision
Vietnam
Vietnam is long enough that the arrival city should follow the route. Ho Chi Minh City makes sense for a south-to-north trip, the Mekong Delta or Cambodia. Hanoi makes sense for the north, Ha Long Bay and a journey that moves south. Saving on one airport and then immediately buying a domestic flight in the opposite direction is the kind of false economy a wider search is meant to prevent.
The Philippines specialist
Manila
Manila belongs on the shortlist when the Philippines is the actual trip. An archipelago usually creates another flight, ferry or both, so the important comparison is not Manila against Bangkok in isolation. It is the complete route from Australia to the island where the holiday begins. Check terminal details and leave conservative buffers on separate tickets.
After the runway
A good gateway keeps working after you land
Kuala Lumpur and Singapore demonstrate why the ground connection belongs in the fare comparison. KLIA Ekspres says its non-stop train links KLIA Terminal 1 with KL Sentral in 28 minutes. From Changi, the airport's official guidance sends city-bound MRT passengers via Tanah Merah or Expo; it also estimates a taxi to the city at about 30 minutes and S$25 to S$45.
Bangkok requires another kind of attention. Suvarnabhumi's Airport Rail Link operates from the terminal's B1 level between 5:30am and midnight. The official airport shuttle between Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang runs every 30 minutes from 5am to midnight for passengers who can show onward travel—but an airport change still deserves hours, not optimism.

Price the itinerary the fare creates
Imagine Bali is A$180 cheaper than Bangkok. The actual trip starts in Chiang Mai. The Bali option now needs another international ticket, another luggage allowance, another airport wait and possibly a hotel night if the schedules do not fit. Bangkok may need only a domestic flight or train after a stop you wanted anyway.
Reverse the trip and the answer can reverse too. If the holiday begins with four nights in Bali, the cheap DPS fare is no longer a detour. It is the first destination. The onward ticket is part of the itinerary rather than a repair.

Two bookings can unlock excellent fares. They can also transfer the disruption risk from the airline to you. If the first flight is late, the second carrier may treat you as a no-show. Checked baggage may need to be collected and checked again. Immigration queues, terminal changes and unfamiliar airports all use the same buffer.
The safest version turns the gateway into a stopover. Arrive, sleep, see the city and continue the next day or later. That does not eliminate every risk, but it stops a 90-minute delay in Australia from destroying a separately booked regional flight.
